About

This blog has been set up purely out of an immense interest in local history which I have. This interest must have begun early in my youth as I spent much of it venturing up Arklow’s Main Street after school; usually stopping in cafés such as the Viking with my grandparents; listening to stories etc. From there it has grown exponentially and much of that is down to the work of the likes of Jim Rees and Pat Power. Both of whom have done an excellent job of recording the long history of the town. Rees’ book The Story of a Town in particular is perhaps the most concise publication made on the history of Arklow and despite having reread it numerous times I usually come away knowing something new about the town I grew up in each time.

So Arklow is not without its history and it is certainly not without its hard-working local historians. So why have I decided to start this blog? The reason is that despite the large amount of material available I am always looking for more to learn and I’m sure others are too. I am no historian but I have enough interest to have searched for hours and hours through different search engines and databases for whatever scraps of information I could find and that I could have missed before. That is the reason I have set this blog up. It is to bring as much of the information I can find on the internet and elsewhere to one place for everyone who’s interested’s convenience. Including my own. I hope it works out and I hope you enjoy.
